Old Friends

The last few days has been a whirlwind of events:

Sunday we visited with Claudia and Achem and their children, Lily and Stella.  Claudia made a lovely goulash and spatzel for supper.  It was my first taste of Spatzel.  We then had a visit into the early hours of the morning.  Poor Achem had to be up at 3 am to go to work.  In the morning a tearful goodbye was said.

After leaving Claudia we took a drive to Lahr and through the Black Forest, stopped by the ruins of Hohengeroldspeck.  This was the area John inhabitated while in the military.  John and Guzzo saw the ruins 30 years ago and crawled all over them before it was cleaned up and made a tourist attraction.  At the ruins I became queen and John found himself a girlfriend.

Walking down was a whole lot easier than walking up.  Walking down we saw an elderly gentleman using his walking poles.  He was spryer than us I have to say.

We then drove to the Rhein River just outside Ichenheim and I saw France for the first time.  It is only a short distance.  The trees on the other side of the river are in France.  We will visit France tomorrow  after we visit with Uli and Jurgen.

..when we arrived back in Ichenheim we went with Petra and the family to Petra's parents to celebrate Petra's grandmother's 98 birthday.  Petra's grandmother was very mobile for her age.  Petra's father has a large garden and back yard which I hope to go back and take pictures of for my mother.

The yard's and winter garden's are something here.  Every house I have seen so far has massive decorative back yards.  Here at Petra's it looks like something from a storybook.  I will take pictures of this as well before we leave.

To close off the evening we had a surprise visit from Gisela and Riva and another get together for everyone.
