First Impressions

We arrived safe and sound at Flensburg, Germany.  This involved 20 hours of travel.  Amidst the tiredness there is sensory overload but I will write about my first impressions.

John and I chose to fly business class so it was our first experience spending time in a first class lounge while waiting for our flight.  This was very relaxing with calming music, appertiffs and drinks.

On the plane we experienced plenty of leg room and excellent customer service and support.  I was told I would like this.  Holy cow, Joe, when do you get anytime to sleep with all that service?  For our meal we had baked salmon as an appertiff, leg of duck with potatoes and carrots, and a mousse for dessert.  I ate it all which is amazing,  a big surprise for those who know me.  The service is so different than that in economy as to provide hot rolled facecloths prior to the supper meal and in the morning before croissants.  As an aside, in our chosen seats my legs were too short to reach the foot rests with all the extra space which gave John a good chuckle.

The transfer in Iceland was a mad dash as our flight was late, but it was for naught as our connecting flight also left late and the boarding lineup was long.

Our arrival in Frankfurt was uneventful beyond upgrading our vehicle rental to a full size car with diesel.

Our seven hour drive to Flensburg provided some observations:

John driving at 130 km / hour was like taking a Sunday drive back home.  Although the speed of those passing us gave me a start it soon became apparent they drive a lot smarter and are more courteous than back home.  The law that slower traffic keep right with no passing on the right is adhered to here. it makes it possible for the faster traffic to get by safely.  So that is what using all  available lanes looks like 😀.

German toilets, water closets, took a moment to figure out as there are no lids on some and the flusher mechanism is built into the wall.

We took 2 off ramps looking for lunch but never ate as we didn't want to eat at McD's or subway.  This along with the a water closet stop and one view from the highway imprinted on my mind that for the limited amount of space they have, they have an excellent design for the ease of truckers parking and access while leaving plenty of room for the average Joe.  Nothing like Gasoline alley, where 50 trucks would block the whole area.

Aside from this I saw a lot of trees on the Autobahn.

We saw a lovely sunset last night on the airplane and a double rainbow after some rain during our drive.

Tomorrow is another 8 hour drive and John is already snoring.  Our expectation is to visit town Degernes in Norway and stay in a hotel 1/2 hour from there. Till tomorrow.
